My first professional position after I received my Ph.D. was as a staff pathologist in the early days of the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C. Since I was the only pathologist in the agency at that time, I was asked by other offices to help them develop the first set of testing guidelines for industry to be used in human risk assessment.
Risk assessment was a newly developing art and science, and involved developing science policy that would impact national and international interests. There was a great deal of contention among diverse stakeholders within the agency as well as industry and environmental advocacy groups. Each stakeholder had a different perspective, but while each perspective was correct, the perspectives were in conflict with each other.
The agency had been unable to break the stalemate for several years at the time I was asked to join the project. I was able to facilitate a process of collaboration that achieved a consensus among the diverse stakeholders. We succeeded in forming a new paradigm that addressed the many diverse concerns, and created science policy to respond to them. Within one year of my participation, the Agency was able to issue the first set of guidelines and I received a Special Achievement Award from the EPA for facilitating this process.
My director shared with me that I had succeeded in a highly political situation with people who hated and distrusted each other; but everyone loved and trusted me. She said that she didn’t know my secret, and wished that I could put it in a bottle and sell it.
Since that first achievement it has been my career challenge to find a way to teach what came so naturally to me. Through my studies and work in health science, management, consulting, counseling, and finally in energy medicine, I have found a language and integrative techniques for helping people find new paradigms and health in decision-making and relationships. I created High Energy Decisions(c) to share my “secret” with you.
